Studio Ghibli

Some days I look up at the sky and think, “I’m living in TV.” The sky is a deep deep blue and the green palm trees stand out against it, waving their fronds gently — it’s surreal. I doubt I’ll ever get used to it. So today have some music that makes you feel as if you’re living in a fantasy; the music of Studio Ghibli.

Hayao Miyazaki’s work is so atmospheric that you just want to jump into it and live there. When I first saw “Spirited Away,” the image that stayed most with me was the one of the train, gently rolling water out of its way as it went along its submerged track. In “Castle In the Sky,” the most beautiful image is as the broken sky-city floats up out of human reach, its lone robot tending the garden that is still growing in between the stones. And in “My Neighbor Totoro,” the citybound viewer is stunned by Miyazaki’s Japanese countryside, all glittering lakes and long, wooded stretches. Miyazaki’s fantasy is completely different from Tolkein’s, but they share a love of the pastoral, and wonderful things can come out of the woods to play.

Totally adore Studio Ghibli, and also Aoi Hiragi the manga artist who created The Cat Baron and CatWorld. In my wildest dream I get to make the cat story in my head with Studio Ghibli. (And you totally missed Nausicaa! :-) )

I love Nausicaa, but I don’t have any music from it.

Thanks — my 3 year old loves Totoro and Kiki! Any insight into where to find the 2 pop songs that are at the beginning and end of Kiki?

rat — I’m not advocating the skipping of work here! Okay, maybe I am ….

larry — For free, you mean? I’m sorry, I don’t. I only have these three. I guess you’ll have to lay down some cash :D Your 3-year-old has good taste though, it’s worth the money to foster that.

Oh, it doesn’t need to be for free — I think my son would be disappointed if I didn’t spend some ridiculous amount on his Miyazaki fetish (you know how much a good catbus goes for!). I just can’t figure out where to get the soundtrack: I’m sure it’s obvious — I’ve just had no luck . . .

If you find a catbus, let me know ! I’ve got two boys myself who would probably appreciate a ride.

Amazon has two links to the soundtracks (one import, one not, but both I think in Japanese): here and here. I also read that if you buy the original 2-disc DVD from Disney (probably costing about as much as a cat-bus) it includes the soundtrack.
